Our guide to the perfect picnic

Charlie & Ivy's Picnic

Here in the UK, we love a proper picnic! Whether it’s a day at the races, proms in the park, a trip out on the river or just an explore of the countryside with friends, nothing quite beats it.

To celebrate National Picnic Week, we’ve popped together some top tips for making your picnic perfect. We’re also sharing three brand new, picnic inspired recipes, to make sure your next alfresco outing is as delicious and show stopping as can be.

Choose the Ideal Location

The right setting can make all the difference. Look for locations with beautiful views, such as parks, beaches, botanical gardens, or lakesides. Ensure the spot is easy to reach and has parking nearby. And don’t forget to find some shade, especially important on hot days, find a spot with plenty of shade from trees or bring a sun umbrella.

Plan the Menu

Food is the centrepiece of any picnic. Whilst it’s good to bring dishes that cover a range of flavours, opt for items that are easy to transport and eat outdoors.

Sandwiches, salads and easy to pick at snacks. Try and create items that can be served into individual pots and jars for ease when eating and clearing up. Try our new recipes for a little inspiration!

Enjoy simple sweets such as cookies, brownies, or cakes, all easy to pack and share, enjoy some strawberries and berries. Try to take items that don’t rely on being refrigerated, and that will transport easily with cool blocks.

Bring a selection of drinks like lemonade, iced tea, or a bottle of wine, but remember it’s always important to pack plenty of water to enjoy, especially if the sun shines. Think about bottling some up with strips of cucumber and lemon for some added flavour.

Pack Wisely

A well-packed picnic basket ensures you have everything you need. Choose a blanket, large and comfortable, maybe with a waterproof backing to sit on.

Pack reusable plates, cups, cutlery, and napkins. Don’t forget a cutting board and knife. Try to be environmentally conscious and use beeswax wraps, cloth napkins, and reusable bags instead of plastic.

Don’t forget that cool bag! Keep drinks cool, and perishable items fresh with an insulated cooler bag or ice packs.

Finally, leave no trace. Ensure you pack a bag for rubbish. Clean up after yourselves and leave the area as pristine as you found it.

Planning the perfect picnic involves thoughtful preparation and a spirit of adventure. By choosing a beautiful location, preparing delicious food, packing thoughtfully, you can create a memorable and enjoyable alfresco experience. Happy picnicking!
